Demonstrations & Workshops

There will be a number of on-going demonstrations throughout the Convention. We consider these workshops as well, since Convention participants are invited and encouraged to participate as well. Most demonstrations offer an opportunity for those interested to get actual 'hands-on' experience.

If you are interested in 'hands-on' experience, please dress accordingly and bring rubberized gloves for handling cement and lime, goggles, and an air filter if you want to be mixing cement or lime stuccos or mortars.

If you're interested in leading a workshop, or in assisting one of the workshop leaders, please e-mail Nolan@mortarsprayer.com.

Build a Hypar Roof with George Nez and/or Gary Olsen, beginning Thursday. Convention participants arriving on Thursday can help assemble the frame for George Nez's roof made by joining four hyperbolic paraboloids. On Friday fiberglass scrim strips will be stapled to the frame, and on Saturday we will spray a cement mix, working it from both sides to wet and embed the fiberglass in cement.

The design pictured here is built in two sections for easy transport on a flatbed.

Gary (gobug) worked with George to build the hypar roof shown in the first three images. This project will be led by George Nez, if his schedule allows. If George is unable to attend, Gary will head up the project.

For more photos on the hypar Gary worked on in Colorado with George Nez, go here:

Prepare 26' and 10' airforms for inflation, Thursday. On thursday we will set up these two airforms, securing them to a curved wood base secured to the ground. On Friday morning, during coffee and registration, these will be inflated.

Assemble a Conics Structure.' Work with Chuck Henderson, the inventor of Conics, to build a conics structure.

Paul Sarnstrom: Martin Iorns Technique, Friday, 3-5:15 p.m.
Paul, the Director of the Ferrocement Educational Network and the creator and manager of the Ferrocement Mailing List, will present a discussion and demonstration of Martin Iorns laminate ferrocement techniques. Though Mr. Iorns is no longer with us, he pioneered important techniques in ferrocement construction ( http://home.att.net/~miorns/ ). There will be an opportunity for hands-on experience for those interested.
Martin Iorns patented, in 1964, a method for creating laminated ferrocement boat hulls. The method involved laying down a thin layer or mortar, then pressing a metal lath or wire screen into the mortar, embedding it. Mr. Sarnstrom learned this technique directly from Mr. Iorns and will be demonstrating it to the group.
Richard Austin Workshop, Saturday 3:45 - 5:45 p.m. Richard will do a presentation and demonstration of his ultra-low-cost construction methods. See his website for more information: http://www.planetaryrenewal.org/ipr/ultralc.html

I will be demonstrating a lime stone decorative veneer called Appli-Stone using similar methods as well as architectural precast. I create castle and quaried stone finishes.

A crushed limestone thin-shell finish resembles quarried or castle-like stone with unlimited coursing patterns and a PSI of approximatly 4000 as well as coloring and inhancing techniques indicitive of old world stone. APPLI-STONE tm

Bob Merrill on Hybridized Construction - Saturday, 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Bob will demonstrate making papercrete and working with papercrete, and discuss how he uses papercrete in combination with rammed earth, strawbale, and other alternative building techniques, in his Hybridized Construction system.

This mixer is an example of scrounged parts. A lawn mower engine, 55 ga. drum, rototiller shaft and blade, and some pipe and angle steel. I use it more than my big mixers because of the manageable amounts of fibrecrete it produces. With Nolan's sprayer it has been used to build several strawbale homes and is currently doing a ferro/fibrecrete structure. I will bring it and some other goodies to our gathering.
Wayne R. Miller from Foamalite will be building a small demo project during the convention to demonstrate how the foamalite products are used. The demonstration project will begin Thursday and will continue Friday and Saturday morning before the normally scheduled Convention activities. Arrive early to watch or participate!

Displays
Convention participants are invited and encouraged to set up a display to share information or products with Convention participants. Everything goes-- bring your boom truck, PVA samples, Onebone Mixer, or photos of your recent project. We only ask that you let us know what you're planning on displaying so we can provide the necessary space, power, water, tables, etc. If you're planning on setting up a display, please e-mail Nolan-- nolan@mortarsprayers.com.
