ShowAndTell: May be able to bring some models to spark conversation.

comments: My interests are in ultra-low cost construction. Especially for roofs.  I want to build non-combustable warehouse space that is self heating and cooling in the Phoenix, AZ area.  Thin shell or ferrocement construction has the potential to be part of my projects.  I want to develop self-shored and integrally insulated watertight roofs where the top coating is primarily there for reflectivity and only serving a secondary redundant purpose as waterproofing membrane.  For my purposes, the solution must meet the International Building Code requirements.  I may come with Wayne Miller and would camp out.

Interests:

For some 13+ years my wife and I have desired to build an as 'off grid as practical' home.  We desire a semi-rural lifestyle, commutable to a cash-paying job like I now have in Denton, Tx.  We want practical independence via a scratch-built, scratch-designed home that can:

    - lessen our participation in a fossil-fueled economy
    - after construction, allow us more time for participation in/service to our local community
    - create a bond between us & our home by hands-on/on-site participation in its construction

Decided on settling near Denton, Tx we are shopping for acreage outside Denton's city limits.  We hope to have funds available to start sometime this year.  Meanwhile, we study, look for success, look for others with passions like ours.

Our current aim is at some hybrid PAGS (passive annualized geo-solar) residence.  I like ferrocement but am wary of getting carried away with 'one-material-solves-all' ideas.  I like strawbale but fear mold (respiratory problems) & homes are much more than great walls.  I love the idea of rammed earth but fear carpal tunnel syndrome from manual ramming.  I would love to find a practical ways to make indigenous materials within the code.

Some personal history:

My wife is an artist from West Virginia & a former studio art professor at St. Vincent DePaul  University in Chicago. She has been on permanent disability from 3 bouts of breast cancer.  She needs a well-designed that enables her to continue working within her disability limits.  She also wishes to do serious organic gardening, outdoors and in year-round greenhouses.

My BS was in Computer Science from U of Houston, my journeyman's card (earned with pride alongside my BS) was from Ironworkers Local #84 in Houston, and my last top-off party & last ironworker job was on an I.M. Pei building (then called Texas Commerce Bank Tower).

Besides Japanse-style, sparse interiors for living, I crave a 'Fortress of Solitude' workshop on a farm/home compound that always needs a next layer of evolutionary development.

My last ironworker job was on a Houston skyscraper designed by I.M. Pei. That experience lit within me a growing love for good architecture.

Great architecture is like great wine - fine for the spirit and the body. Too bad such wine is is so hard to come by.

Cement mixes, insulations, forming systems, shotcrete...

My input would be mostly theoretical from an FC point of view but I have general construction knowledge from building and remodel over a lifetime though most of my FC knowledge is research rather than practical.
